Memoir installment #2:
After I had sent my kit off, I excitedly told my mom and stepdad that I had done 23&Me, “I did a 23&Me test so I could learn more about our heritage.” In proper Jennie form, I backhanded her shoulder and said, “If there are any Skeletons in the closet, now would be the time to share with me,” I laughed. I was joking. I remember my mom stared at me blankly and didn’t say anything at first. I told her she should also do one, and she was not up for it. She gave me excuses like the government would have my DNA, it would be in databases, etc.
I didn’t understand; She had been a nurse in the Army. If the government wanted her DNA, they already had it. I’ve had three children, given blood, and had surgery. If someone wanted my DNA, they likely already had it.
